WHY WE LOVE IT
–
We've said it over and over again - the Datejust may just be the perfect watch.
Coupling perfect proportions, simple dial layouts, and robust movements, Rolex's most prolific model is an icon of timekeeping that has been in continuous production for decades. Moreover, the Datejust is all the watch that just about any of us really need.
With its famous fluted white gold bezel, the 1601 can be distinguished from its sister references of Datejust, the 1603, which has an engine-turned steel bezel; or the 1600, which has a polished smooth steel bezel. Like all 1600-series Datejust models, the 1601 features a pie-pan dial, acrylic crystal, and classic 36mm proportions that work brilliantly on fabric straps or metal bracelets.
This particular example, a Reference 1601, dates to circa 1970 and is something of a special Datejust. It features a very uncommon two-tone rose gold and stainless steel Oyster case with 'holey lugs' with a magnified acrylic crystal, a signed rose gold crown, a fluted rose gold bezel, a matte black Tritium dial with a matching handset, and a matching two-tone Jubilee bracelet with a signed blade clasp.
How about that!
While remaining incredible versatile as all Datejust are, this outstanding piece flies under the radar and epitomizes the phrase, "if you know, you know..."
OVERALL CONDITION
The case is in excellent condition overall showing signs of light previous polishing and light wear from age and use. Matte black Tritium dial with applied rose gold indices is in fantastic condition showing even patination to Tritium elements with matching handset. Signed crown.
