WHY WE LOVE IT
In the 1950s, the advent (and immediacy) of jet travel — and the frequency at which transatlantic and transcontinental flights occurred — made it necessary for travelers to have a wristwatch that could display two time zones at once.
Numerous display systems were developed for this express purpose, from simple rotating bezels containing city names to complications using a dedicated hand to indicate a particular location. The more contemporary the watchmaker, the more avant garde these systems often were.
Roger Dubuis, a speciality producer of haute horlogerie fare based in Geneva, makes some of the most outlandish world timers available. Part of the brand’s signature Excalibur collection, the Triple Time Zones 18K RG features an impressive configuration in which three separate time zones are displayed simultaneously: one on the main dial, and one on each of two sub-dials read in conjunction with a rotating city ring.
Housed in a 45mm rose gold case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, and a notched bezel, it features a sunburst champagne dial with painted black and applied gold Roman indices, a gold ‘sword’ handset, and alternate time zone subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock. Powered by an in-house manually wound movement, it comes paired to a brown alligator leather strap with a signed, gold push-button deployant clasp, and also includes its factory goodies.
If what you’re after is a travel watch with some panache, then boy, is this Roger Debuis the right timepiece for you!
