WHY WE LOVE IT
The Rolex Submariner is a classic, and there’s good reason why almost every collector winds up with a vintage Rolex sports model in their stash - these are timeless, tough, do-anything, go-anywhere tool watches.
Rolex has been producing Submariners uninterrupted since the watch was introduced in 1953, and while those first Big Crown subs are truly incredible pieces, most of us will have to wait for our lottery numbers to hit to get one of those strapped to our wrist.
This particular example dates to circa 1963 and features the 39mm Oyster case with holey lugs that we all love, with a few special things. It features pointed crown guards, a gloss black 'gilt' dial with an underline below "Oyster Perpetual" denoting the presence of Tritium, and an 'Explorer' dial with "3, 6, and 9" quadrant indices - only available on the earliest examples - with a correct matching handset.
Fitted to a slightly later folded-link stainless steel bracelet with a signed blade clasp, this rare as hens teeth Submariner is an honest example, with a thick case showing light polish and light wear.
The Reference 5513 is arguably the cleanest variant of the Submariner line - a true icon of icons, and no collection should be without one.
But for those that seek more rarified air - this might just be the thing.
OVERALL CONDITION
The case is in very good, strong condition overall with thick lugs and signs of light previous polishing with light wear from age and use. Gloss black 'gilt - underline - Explorer,' Tritium dial shows lovely, even 'cosmic' stippling patination with patinated indices and correct matching handset. Later bezel insert shows light patination. Signed service crown.
